Angami women snake up the narrow walk path to their village after the gate pulling ceremony at the State Museum in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. Traditionally, this ceremony was a sacred ritual to renew or establish political pacts between khels. The women carry the khang (cane basket) suspended by a cane strap on their backs. These baskets contain a gourd container filled with Zu, local rice beer, and a shawl that covers the vessels. The rice beer is offered to spirits at the commemoration of the village gate. In a land where cane and bamboo are plentiful, Nagas weave baskets of all shapes and sizes with great expertise.
